CDS IMA vs OTA: Eligibility, Training, Role and Career Differences

CDS IMA vs OTA

When filling the CDS application form, one of the most important decisions is choosing your academy preferences. For most Army aspirants, this comes down to a comparison of CDS IMA vs OTA. The two academies differ in eligibility, training length, commission type and long-term career path.

Both academies produce officers of the Indian Army. There is no "better" or "lesser" option; each suits a different goal. This guide explains the differences in simple terms so you can choose what fits your plans.

IMA (Indian Military Academy, Dehradun) offers about 18 months of training and a Permanent Commission, and is open only to unmarried men aged 19 to 24. OTA (Officers Training Academy, Chennai) offers about 49 weeks of training and a Short Service Commission of 10 years, extendable to 14. It is open to both men and women aged 19 to 25. IMA candidates write three CDS papers, while OTA candidates write two. Salary and rank are the same in service.

What Is IMA?

The Indian Military Academy in Dehradun trains officers for a Permanent Commission in the Indian Army. Cadets here are called Gentleman Cadets. After about 18 months of training, they are commissioned as Lieutenants and can serve until the retirement age of their rank.

Graduates can reach IMA through the CDS exam. It is also where NDA cadets complete their final year of Army training.

What Is OTA?

The Officers Training Academy in Chennai trains officers for a Short Service Commission. Cadets are called Officer Cadets. After about 49 weeks of training, they are commissioned as Lieutenants with an initial service period of 10 years.

Through the CDS exam, OTA is the only option open to women candidates.

Same as OTA men

For CDS II 2026, IMA candidates needed to be born between 2 July 2003 and 1 July 2008. OTA candidates needed to be born between 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2008. That extra year is a big reason why many candidates who cross the IMA age limit still apply for OTA.

Can You Choose Both IMA and OTA?

Yes, male candidates can choose both. There is one important rule, though. If you apply for IMA and OTA together, OTA must be your last preference. If you place it higher, UPSC will still treat it as your last choice.

A few other points worth knowing:

  • If you want only a Short Service Commission, choose OTA as your only preference.

  • Women candidates should choose OTA as their only preference.

  • IMA-qualified candidates who miss out because of limited vacancies may be offered OTA, even if they didn't choose it, provided seats are available and they are willing.

  • If your first choice is offered and you decline it, your candidature for the other regular commission choices is cancelled. Please think carefully about your order of preference.

IMA training is longer and focuses on building officers for a full career. It includes weapons training, tactics, leadership, physical conditioning and military studies.

OTA training covers the same core areas of leadership, tactics, weapon handling and fitness in a shorter, more concentrated schedule. It is just as demanding day to day.

Role After Commission

This is where the two paths are most alike. Officers from both IMA and OTA:

  • Are commissioned as Lieutenants in the Indian Army.

  • Wear the same uniform and lead troops in the same way.

  • Are posted to arms and services based on the Army's requirement, their preferences and their performance in training.

  • Serve in field and peace postings across India.

Women officers from OTA join the arms and services open to women, a list that has expanded in recent years.

Career Differences: Permanent vs Short Service Commission

The real difference in the CDS IMA vs OTA decision is the length and security of your career.

IMA: Permanent Commission

  • Service continues until the retirement age for your rank.

  • Regular pension and long-term benefits after retirement.

  • A longer career gives more time to reach senior ranks such as Colonel, Brigadier and above.

OTA: Short Service Commission

  • An initial tenure of 10 years, which can be extended by 4 years (14 years in total).

  • Officers can be considered for Permanent Commission in the 10th year, based on vacancies, performance and suitability.

  • Officers who wish to leave early can apply for release in their 5th year of service.

  • At release, officers receive terminal gratuity (half a month's pay for every six months of service), but usually not a regular pension.

  • Many SSC officers move into civilian careers in their early to mid-thirties, where their leadership experience is highly valued.

Promotions within service follow the same time scale for both: Captain after 2 years, Major after 6 years and Lieutenant Colonel after 13 years.

Salary and Benefits: IMA vs OTA

While in service, the pay is exactly the same.

Both IMA and OTA officers also get free medical care, subsidised accommodation, canteen facilities, leave travel concessions and group insurance.

CDS IMA vs OTA: Which Should You Choose?

IMA may suit you if:

  • You want the Army as your lifelong career.

  • You want pension security and long-term benefits.

  • You are within the 19–24 age limit and comfortable with the Maths paper.

OTA may suit you if:

  • You are a woman aspirant. OTA is your route through CDS.

  • You are 24 or 25 and have crossed the IMA age limit.

  • You prefer a shorter training period and a defined service term, with the option to seek Permanent Commission later.

  • You are from a non-maths background and want to focus on two papers.

Many male candidates choose both, with IMA first and OTA last. This keeps both doors open while you prepare.
